x, with this going from 10.0 up until 10.15 with macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple switched to numbering major releases with numbers that increase by 1 with every major release. Until macOS 11 Big Sur, all versions of the operating system were given version numbers of the form 10. Previous Macintosh operating systems (versions of the classic Mac OS) were named using Arabic numerals, as with Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9. However, it is also commonly pronounced like the letter "X". The letter "X" in Mac OS X's name refers to the number 10, a Roman numeral, and Apple has stated that it should be pronounced "ten" in this context. Mac OS X was originally presented as the tenth major version of Apple's operating system for Macintosh computers until 2020. The project was first code named " Rhapsody" and then officially named Mac OS X. This purchase also led to Steve Jobs returning to Apple as an interim, and then the permanent CEO, shepherding the transformation of the programmer-friendly OPENSTEP into a system that would be adopted by Apple's primary market of home users and creative professionals. This led Apple to acquire NeXT in 1997, allowing NeXTSTEP, later called OPENSTEP, to serve as the basis for Apple's next generation operating system. Throughout the 1990s, Apple had tried to create a "next-generation" OS to succeed its classic Mac OS through the Taligent, Copland and Gershwin projects, but all were eventually abandoned. Its graphical user interface was built on top of an object-oriented GUI toolkit using the Objective-C programming language. The kernel of NeXTSTEP is based upon the Mach kernel, which was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, with additional kernel layers and low-level user space code derived from parts of BSD. There, the Unix-like NeXTSTEP operating system was developed, before being launched in 1989. The heritage of what would become macOS had originated at NeXT, a company founded by Steve Jobs following his departure from Apple in 1985. As of 2023, the most recent release of macOS is macOS 14 Sonoma. In 2020, Apple began the Apple silicon transition, using self-designed, 64-bit ARM-based Apple M series processors on the latest Macintosh computers. In 2006, Apple transitioned to the Intel architecture with a line of Macs using Intel Core processors. MacOS has supported three major processor architectures, beginning with PowerPC-based Macs in 1999. After sixteen distinct versions of macOS 10, macOS Big Sur was presented as version 11 in 2020, and every subsequent version has also incremented the major version number, similarly to classic Mac OS and iOS. Apple shortened the name to "OS X" in 2011 and then changed it to "macOS" in 2016 to align with the branding of Apple's other operating systems, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The derivatives of macOS are Apple's other operating systems: iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and audioOS.Ī prominent part of macOS's original brand identity was the use of Roman numeral X, pronounced "ten", as well as code naming each release after species of big cats, or places within California. All releases from Mac OS X Leopard onward with the exclusion of Mac OS X Lion are UNIX 03 certified. The first desktop version, Mac OS X 10.0, was released on March 24, 2001. During this time, Apple computers co-founder Steve Jobs had left Apple and started his own company, NeXT, developing the NeXTSTEP platform that would later be acquired by Apple to form the basis of Mac OS X. Mac OS X succeeded classic Mac OS, a Macintosh operating system from 1984 to 2001. Within the market of desktop and laptop computers, it is the second most widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows and ahead of all Linux machines, including ChromeOS. It is the primary operating system for Apple's Mac computers. PVC, vinyl, or plastic ceiling tiles are very versatile and are another inexpensive choice. Fiberglass tiles can be found at all major home improvement retailers. Prices can go up to $8.00 or $9.00 per square foot for very thick tiles that are designed to provide outstanding sound absorbing performance.Īrmstrong is the largest provider of residential fiberglass ceiling tiles but there are other brands including Top Tile. Most inexpensive Fiberglass ceiling tiles cost about $.50 to $1.50 per square foot. Because Fiberglass tiles are laminated with vinyl, painting them is not recommended. Most Fiberglass tiles are available in a 2’ x 4’ size and for installation into drop ceiling grids. Fiberglass is usually selected when thermal or acoustic properties are desired. Tiles are mainly white and lightly textured. They are maintenance-free and durable, but careful, or professional installation is necessary to prevent the fiberglass material from breaking loose.įiberglass tiles are easy to find but there are not as many styles available as there are with some of the other materials. Fiberglass tiles provide insulating properties and are very good at absorbing sound. Fiberglass Ceiling Tilesįiberglass ceiling tiles are another inexpensive choice and are made from glass fibers encased in resins and formed into tiles. You can find selections of USG, Armstrong, and other brands of Mineral Fiber ceiling tile at most home improvement stores. For instance, the Armstrong Tincraft profile tile, which has been embossed to replicate the look of an antique tin ceiling, costs around $6.50 per square foot. Mineral Fiber ceiling tiles can cost more depending on the thickness of the tile, the texture, and level of moisture and stain protection that the tiles have been treated with. Armstrong also offers a number of inexpensive Mineral Fiber ceiling tiles in all 3 sizes with costs from $1 to $2.50 per square foot. Costs for lightly textured tiles in their Budget Line, including the Stonehurst and Adobe profiles, range from $.50 to $1 per square foot. USG makes a large variety of cheap Mineral Fiber ceiling tiles in 2’ x 2’, 2’ x 4’ and 12" x 12" sizes. These tiles can be painted with latex paints but paint will slightly reduce their sound absorbing abilities by filling some of the crevices. Mineral Fiber ceiling tiles can be used in almost any room, except a bathroom, as long as the tiles have been treated with a moisture protection product. You can find them in 2’ x 2’ and 2’ x 4’ sizes for standard drop ceilings and in 12” x 12” sizes made to be mounted directly to the ceiling surface with an adhesive. Mineral Fiber tiles are very common and widely available. However, the tiles on the market today are generally treated with products making them resistant to these issues – at least for a time. When they do, they are prone to mold, mildew and sagging. Mineral Fiber tiles are not very durable and will absorb moisture in damp areas. Many of the tiles are made with fissures or perforations to give them better acoustical properties. Because the tiles are wet-formed, they can be pressed to replicate the appearance of tin ceilings or heavy stucco. The tiles are available in many textures from smooth to heavily textured. Mineral fiber tiles are made from various recycled materials including paper, fiberglass, perlite, and mineral wool combined with binding agents and formed into tiles. You can find these tiles, as well as other brands, at most big box home improvement stores. Fiberboard ceiling tiles can easily be painted. Their Alpine profile features more acoustic properties and costs about $.95 per square foot, which is still pretty cheap – less than $200 for a 12x15 room. USG makes a variety of fiberboard ceiling tiles in 2’ x 2’ and 2’ x 4’ sizes with costs between $.55 and $.65 per square foot for their Fifth Avenue and Radar profiles. Some fiberboard tiles have been treated to resist moisture damage and sagging but this will make the tiles slightly more expensive.įiberboard ceiling tiles would not be a good choice for a humid environment like a damp basement or bathroom. While fiberboard is the one of the cheapest ceiling tiles materials, it is not the most common because it is not durable and is susceptible to mold, mildew, sagging, staining, and water damage. Fiberboard is one of the least expensive types of ceiling tile. TBH I don't know if this will work - I'm just (hopefully) explaining what will happen should everything go like its supposed to.With that out of the way let’s talk terminology. If this doesn't work, it'll just ask you to format the drive and it'll be with the default allocation size. If Windows is clever (I haven't tried this so I don't know), the idea is that your 59900MB (or whatever it is) partition won't have any data on it, so it won't need any extra formatting and Windows should be able to install straight on there, and use the extra 100MB for its "system reserved" partition. This will mean that there will be 100MB unallocated space which Windows can use. So (I'm pulling numbers out of thin air here for an example) - if your drive has 60000MB free space, when you format with 32K allocation size, make sure that partition is 59900MB. make sure when you create your partition in your other host PC, you subtract 100MB from the max size of the partition. You need to create this partition after you have issued the secure erase command, when formatting it in the USB caddy. HTH, please reply if I've got something wrong.Īs long as you keep 100MB of your SSD as unformatted (aka RAW) space, Windows should format that space itself and use it as required by setup. Someone may well correct me though - and indeed you might find that using 32K doesn't give any tangible speed boosts :P The GUI installer is designed to be for dummies, it is ridiculously easy to use and I haven't seen any advanced options. The only way to change the allocation size AFAIK is through the command line, and although I've used Windows 7 extensively, I have only used command line on startup repair - I've not come across it's availability in the installer. Should no partition be detected, it will automatically give you a quick format across the drive using "NTFS Default allocation size". The answer to this is the installer won't allow it - it'll simply give you the option to delete partitions/create a new one on which you can install Windows. If this isn't possible or if performance is slower, you want to know whether Windows 7 can allow you to choose the allocation size when it formats. (This should be possible - Windows shouldn't need to format it if it's already pre-formatted with NTFS 32K allocation). If performance is better you want to keep the 32K allocation and install Windows on it. When you have the results you will plug it back into your PC, and reinstall Windows. You will then disconnect the SSD from SATA and connect it to another host PC via a USB caddy, format it with NTFS with 32K allocation size, benchmark it. Using Parted Magic you'll issue the Secure Erase command. So you aren't going to bother with imaging your current Windows installation - you shall go straight to using Parted Magic while it's already in your PC connected via SATA. I'll try and repeat it back to check I've understood everything, along with my answer to each of your points. |
